Sean Hamilton, a student in the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication at High Point University, officially became one of just 20 pioneering students in a new Sports Communication program the school is offering for a first time this fall.

Now a junior, he has begun taking specialized courses tailored for students interested in the worldwide enterprise of sports.  The bulk of his classes now focus on convergent journalism and sports reporting.  He also is enrolled in sports marketing to fully understand the line of work from a business perspective.

“I’ve always dreamed of getting a job in this business that I could enjoy getting out of bed to go to in the morning,” Hamilton said in an interview Wednesday.

Hamilton writes a column every week in the ASPA award-winning campus newspaper Campus Chronicle.  He frequently contacts sports information directors associated with the school's athletic department in order to conduct interviews with Division I athletes and develop feature columns.

Hamilton is a member of the school's SportsLink club, which produces online video streams of school sporting events.  Students in the club make up all of the jobs required to produce a public broadcast.  The videos are available via the school website and the Big South Network website.  Hamilton works primarily in the club as a play-by-play commentator.

“Not only is commentating fun, it is also something that not many other college students get to do.  This sort of experience is huge when you consider that most Division I schools pay hired professionals to handle their team’s broadcasts,” Hamilton said on Wednesday.

During spring break last year, he also had the opportunity to work directly as a public relations assistant for the Big South Conference at its championship basketball tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

He worked as a media assistant for Mark Simpson, the Assistant Commissioner of the Big South.  He got valuable experience managing the marketing tables, writing post game summaries and assisting with ESPN broadcasts as well as assisting VIP's.  He believed it to be a great experience and something he would like to do again in 2016.

“Sports were my sanctuary when I was growing up. There is no doubt that I would be dissatisfied if I didn’t take the opportunity to pursue a career in it.”
